Will my devices work with Ting Wi-Fi?
Curious if your current devices can keep up with today’s faster Wi-Fi?
Most devices (smart phones, tablets, smart TV's, computers) still work just fine–even if they don’t support the very latest features. In this guide, we’ll walk you through what to expect and how to check if your devices can take full advantage of Ting’s blazing-fast internet.
Will my current devices work with Ting's fast Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi keeps getting better
Wi-Fi has improved a lot over the years. Each new version brings faster speeds and better performance–especially when multiple devices are connected. To get the most out of Ting’s 2 Gbps internet, it helps to know if your devices are up to date.
Not sure if your device is compatible?
A good rule of thumb:
- Devices made before 2020 likely don’t support the latest Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi 6 or 7).
- Devices from 2020 or newer might support newer Wi-Fi standards–but it depends on the model.
Just like older TVs couldn't show 4K content until you upgraded to a 4K TV, older devices can't take advantage of the newest Wi-Fi speeds unless they're built to support them.
Good news: Older devices still work
Even if your phone, tablet, or laptop doesn’t support the latest Wi-Fi, it will still connect. Your devices and router will just use the fastest speed they both support. That means everything will still work.
Quick guide: What to expect by device
Laptops & desktops
Most new ones support Wi-Fi 6. Older models may not.
TVs
Many TVs use older Wi-Fi standards, which is usually fine for streaming.
Streaming devices
Newer devices like Fire Stick or Roku often support better Wi-Fi and can improve your streaming.
Phones & tablets
Newer models (2023+) support Wi-Fi 6 or 6E. Older phones and tablets may use Wi-Fi 4 or 5.
Printers, e-readers, smart home gadgets
These often use older Wi-Fi (usually Wi-Fi 4), which is fine for basic tasks.
Not sure if your devices are up to speed?
You don’t need to be an expert to find out. Here are a few easy ways to check:
- Check the box or manual that came with your device–it might say what type of Wi-Fi it supports.
- Visit the manufacturer’s website and look for the “specs” or “technical details” section.
- Search online for your device’s name followed by “Wi-Fi support.”
And here’s the bottom line:
You don’t need to replace everything.
Even if your devices are a few years old, they’ll still work just fine with a new router. They might not be quite as fast, but everything will still connect and run smoothly. And when you do eventually upgrade your gadgets, Ting’s internet will be ready to take full advantage.
