Unlocking your phone: What you need to know
An unlocked phone gives you the freedom to switch to any network, including Ting. Locked phones, on the other hand, are restricted to the carrier they’re locked to, limiting your ability to switch providers.
If your phone is paid off and not on a contract, it’s generally eligible for unlocking. Most carriers will unlock a phone as long as:
- The phone has been active for 60-90 days.
- It’s fully paid off.
- Your account is in good standing.
Common errors on locked phones
When you insert a SIM card from another carrier (like Ting) into a locked phone, you may see an error, which could indicate the device may be locked:
- SIM Not Supported: The phone is locked to another carrier.
- Invalid SIM: Carrier restrictions prevent the phone from recognizing the new SIM.
- Enter SIM Network Unlock PIN: A code is required to unlock the phone for the new carrier.
- SIM Card Not Valid: The phone rejects the SIM because it’s not from the carrier it's locked to.
How to check if your phone is locked
Contact your carrier
Call your carrier and provide your IMEI number (found in Settings > About Phone or by dialing *#06#). They’ll confirm if your phone is locked and guide you through unlocking.
Prepaid devices
Some prepaid phones come with restrictions that lock them for 12 months. Check with your carrier to understand their specific policies.
