Common connection problems

Can’t connect to the internet? Whether you’re trying to check email, browse the web, or stream radio, here’s how to troubleshoot when nothing online is working.

Symptoms

  • Web pages won’t load.
  • You can’t retrieve emails.
  • Streaming services won’t play.
  • Basically, anything that needs internet is offline.

Step-by-step troubleshooting

Let’s walk through a few steps to isolate and fix the issue.

1. Reboot your router

Routers can run for months without a break-but eventually, many start to lock up or slow down.

  • Unplug your router from power.
  • Wait about 30 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and give it 1-2 minutes to reboot.

Still not working? Move to the next step.

2. Bypass your router

This step helps figure out if the issue is with your router or the internet connection itself.

  • Look for the beige cable coming in from the roof-it connects to a small plastic box.
  • From that box, there’s a flat, black Ethernet cable.
  • Unplug the black Ethernet cable from your router.
  • Plug it directly into your computer’s Ethernet port.
  • Make sure your computer is set to automatically obtain an IP address (via DHCP).
  • Reboot your computer.

If you can connect now:
The Simply Bits service is working. The issue is likely with your router. Reach out to the router manufacturer (e.g. Linksys, TP-Link, Netgear) for further help.

Still no connection? Keep going.

3. Power cycle the rooftop device

There’s a small device that powers your rooftop equipment-it needs a quick reboot too.

  • Find the power adapter that connects to the same box mentioned earlier.
  • It should have a green LED light.
  • If the light is off, check your power outlet.
  • If the light is on, unplug the adapter from the outlet.
  • Wait 30–60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and give it another 60 seconds to fully reboot.

Then restart your computer and test your internet again.
