Troubleshooting texting issues with Ting
Texting keeps us connected to the people who matter most, one simple message at a time
It lets you reach out without needing to be available in the moment. If you’re having trouble with your texts, these steps can help you stay connected effortlessly.
Troubleshooting texting (SMS)
1. Try sending a text-only message
Test with a simple text-only message (letters or numbers, no emojis, pictures, or GIFs). This will help determine if the issue is with multimedia messaging or your overall texting service.
2. Delete and re-add the contact
Manually remove the contact and add it back to ensure the number is correctly stored in your phone.
3. Check your blocked numbers
Blocked numbers could prevent you from sending or receiving texts.
iPhone
- Go to Settings
- Tap Phone.
- Select Blocked contacts.
Android
- Open your phone app.
- Select settings.
- Tap Blocked numbers.
4. Check your messaging settings
iPhone
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Messages.
- Ensure iMessage is turned on.
- Tip: If you recently switched iPhones, you may need to disable iMessage on your old device.
Android
- Open the Messages app.
- Tap your profile picture or icon at the top right.
- Select Messages Settings.
- Tap RCS Chats.
- Turn RCS Chats on (if available).
5. Confirm your phone number status
Log in to your Ting account to ensure your number is active.
6. Restart your device
Restarting your device often resolves connectivity issues.
7. Update your software
iPhone
- Go to Settings.
- Tap General.
- Select Software Update.
Android
- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Select System Update.
8. Remove and re-insert your SIM card
Take out your SIM card, wait a few seconds, and reinsert it. This performs a hard reset and refreshes your connection to the Ting mobile network.
9. Confirm you’re not roaming internationally
Ting does not support roaming outside of the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
10. Reset your network settings
📌Note: This will delete saved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth passwords.
iPhone
- Go to Settings.
- Tap General.
- Select Transfer or Reset.
- Tap Reset.
- Choose Reset Network Settings.
Android
- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Select Reset Options.
- Choose Reset Wi-Fi, Mobile & Bluetooth.
- Tap Reset Settings.
Troubleshooting group messaging (MMS)
1. Try sending a text message
Send a message to a single contact to confirm that basic texting works.
2. Turn off Wi-Fi and check data
Disable Wi-Fi and ensure your mobile data is working. Group and picture messages require data services.
3. Check your messaging settings
- iPhone: Go to Settings > Messages > iMessage and ensure it’s toggled On.
- Android: Open Messages, tap your profile icon (or menu icon), navigate to Messages settings > RCS chats, and ensure RCS is toggled OFF.
📌 Note: RCS services are unavailable on Ting V1 SIMs activated after July 12, 2024.
4. Confirm airplane mode is off
iPhone
- Swipe down to open the Control Center.
- Tap the airplane icon to disable Airplane mode if it’s highlighted.
Android
- Open Settings > Network & Internet.
- Toggle Airplane mode Off.
5. Restart your device
A quick restart can refresh your connection to the cellular network.
6. Check your phone number status
Log in to your Ting account and verify that your number is active.
7. Confirm you are not roaming internationally
Ting Mobile currently supports roaming only in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
8. Confirm your software is up-to-date
iPhone
- Go to Settings.
- Tap General.
- Select Software Update.
Android
- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Select System Update.
9. Reset network settings
📌Note: This will erase saved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings.
iPhone
- Go to Settings.
- Tap General.
- Select Transfer or Reset.
- Tap Reset.
- Choose Reset Network Settings.
Android
- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Select Reset Options.
- Choose Reset Wi-Fi, Mobile & Bluetooth.
- Tap Reset Settings.
10. Check network mode
iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Cellular.
- Select Cellular Data Options.
- Tap Enable 4G.
- Select Voice & Data.
Android
- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections.
- Choose Mobile Networks.
- Select Network Mode.
- Select your preferred network.
11. Update carrier settings (iPhone Only)
- Connect to Wi-Fi.
- Go to Settings.
- Tap General.
- Select About.
- Follow any prompts to update.
12. Update APN settings (Android only)
Step 1: Reset APNs to default
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Mobile or Cellular Networks.
- Select Access Point Names.
- Tap the Menu (three dots or “More”).
- Select Reset to Default.
